Faber Maunsell in Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For

Faber Maunsell in Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For

Faber Maunsell, the multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, has been named as one of the top 100 businesses to work for in the UK.  The accolade from the Sunday Times, which is based on detailed questionnaires given to staff, means Faber Maunsell features in the survey for the third time.

The judges commented that Faber Maunsell provided a secure working environment and excellent training and professional development opportunities for staff. This includes time-off for courses and study, in addition to offering rewards for professional success. Faber Maunsell also exhibited a culture of openness and many staff felt the company makes a positive difference to the world.

“We are proud to be named among such a prestigious list of award-winning national and international companies.” says Chief Executive, Ken Dalton. “We have worked hard to develop a forward-thinking management philosophy that encourages individuals to realise their own potential, and to have the opportunity to take a personal stake in the company’s future”.

This adds to the recent tally of awards that Faber Maunsell has received, which includes:

  • Daily Telegraph Best Sustainable Development Award 2005 (December 2005) - Livarot Walk in South Molton, North Devon A D

·         Financial Times 50 Best Workplaces Award - for the third year running (March 2005)

·         Mail on Sunday Best Social Housing Development 2005 (December 2005)

  • Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement from the American Society of Civil Engineers (April 2005) - Rion-Antirion Bridge A D

·         Quality in Construction Awards Major Project of the Year (March 2005) - Bullring, Birmingham A D

The survey, sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry, has been produced by a British organisation called Best Companies Ltd, using a methodology developed in conjunction with Plymouth University.

Unlike recognition schemes, which measure companies in areas such as share price, growth rates or market strategies, the Best Companies approach focuses on the personal responses of individual employees.

To decide the rankings, the organisers sent questionnaires to a random sample of 500 of each company’s employees, asking them searching questions about HR policies, workplace practices, philosophy and company culture.

According to the organisers, a company does not become ‘one of the best workplaces’ by accident. Instead, they say, ‘it is a result of the attitudes and actions of management that support the development of trust and co-operation’.

The organisers also point out that companies designated as ‘one of the best’ generally have above average share performance and usually outperform other companies in their respective market.

Ken Dalton says: “This confirms my own belief that success breeds success, and that happy companies tend to be successful ones. It also verifies the point that has emerged strongly in our staff surveys over the past seven years – that the people who work here are proud of working for Faber Maunsell.”
