Project outline

Extension to an existing Grade 1 listed theatre including the creation of new booking office, foyer, disabled access, dining, reception, rehearsal room, green room and sensitive refurbishment of the existing bar areas.  Remodelling of stage area and back stage areas.

Awarded joint winner of the 'Major Project' category in the Civic Building of the Year competition, run by the Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities - 2006.

Key features

• Unique exterior lighting to illuminate the Grade 1 listed façade, interior lighting design to match existing period features within the bar areas.
• Replacement of space heating, central boiler plant and controls system to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort in auditorium.
• Introduction of ventilation to existing listed bar areas using displacement ventilation.
• Displacement ventilation allowed a low energy design approach as well as maximizing free cooling.
• Displacement ventilation also used within the new foyer, reception and rehearsal areas.
