Olympic Village

Turin, Italy

Project outline

New Olympic Athletes and Media Village as part of the 2006 winter games complex at the old fruit and vegetable market in the Lingotto area of Turin.  The facility comprises a medical centre, Olympic committee administrative centre, athlete’s facilities including fitness gymnasium, restaurant, chill-out space and retail zone.  The athlete’s accommodation is located adjacent, within a car free green oasis, and connected to the “Lingotto” retail and cultural complex by a new 400m pedestrian bridge.

The project incorporates a series of sustainable features including exposed thermal mass, solar thermal water heating, stack-effect natural ventilation, impermeable hard surfaces to reduce surface water drainage, extra low energy light fittings and high insulation values to all buildings.

The project was awarded the 'Gold Medal' by the Italian Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art for the best project during 2003-2006.

The whole Village was originally designed with post-Olympic use in mind.  The flexible and sustainable buildings are ideal for change of use, now and in the future.  The Olympic committee administration building has been designed to accommodate part of the enlarged Turin University teaching space.  Part of the athlete’s leisure facilities are being converted into offices for the Regional Environmental Agency, the rest will be used as exhibition space for small trade fairs.  Many of the apartments will be used for either private or social housing and some of the retail outlets will be converted into a library and large pre-school nursery.
