Project outline

New-build extension of an existing office building located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, Cambridge. The facility is used by the European Bioinformatics Institute.

The building provides approximately 2000m² of office space and incorporates an 80-person IT training facility. The new building is a separate structure connected to the existing by a two-storey link corridor. Main boiler plant was replaced and new dedicated hydrocarbon chillers were installed.  A new electrical substation was also provided.

The brief was for a flexible and highly controllable building incorporating comfort cooling and with the ability to function with openable windows.

The initial requirement was for an open-plan layout suited to ready installation of partitioning in a number of configurations.

The building is BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated.
