Unity Sentinel
Liverpool, UK

Project outline
Unity consists of a 27-storey residential tower and a 16-storey office tower, the first Grade A office building in Liverpool, forming a striking landmark behind the Waterfront, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the first major project on the Liverpool Waterfront since Liverpool was named European City of Culture 2008.
The previous office block on the site was demolished to form platform levels for piling of the contiguous retaining wall to form a new deeper basement. The towers are supported by a combination of piles and pads to suit the rock strata levels.
The commercial tower consists of in-situ columns with post-tensioned flat slabs, with all lateral loads being taken by the cores. The residential building has transfer walls above the car parking levels to allow for economic layouts of the flats above and parking below. Transverse shear walls and conventional in-situ slabs in the tower are topped off by a steel frame penthouse structure.
CABE commented on the scheme: ‘..this is a considered approach to a mixed use development in a commercial area...a design and build scheme, and its successes will depend on the quality and level of detailing and choice of materials.’ The design team was novated to Laing O'Rourke, working with the supply chain was an excellent experience and the quality and success of the building reflects the partnership.
In 2007 Unity Sentinel won the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Regional and National award reflecting Unity’s substantial contribution to the local environment and prominence among the best design in the UK.
