Aviation

We can help airport operators to maintain the balance between growing demand and constraints imposed by planning decisions, environmental issues and increased security measures.

Demand for air travel is likely to drive strong growth in the aviation sector in the immediate future.

According to EC research:

  • Air traffic in Europe is forecast to grow by 2.3 times between 2003 and 2025
  • More than 60 EC airports will be congested by 2025
  • The busiest 20 airports will be saturated for 10 hours a day
  • Planned capacity increases will not meet forecast demand
  • The situation in the South East of England is already critical.

Besides congestion, the industry faces other challenges, notably from the continuing threat of terrorism and from the perception that carbon emissions from aircraft are a significant contributor to climate change.

We are well placed to provide solutions to the difficulties airport owners and operators will face over the next few years.

The Aviation sector in the UK and Europe is entering a period of far reaching changes and scrutiny from external stakeholders and the general public. As rising demand increasingly puts pressure on the existing infrastructure, the industry is also seeing the effects of a public debate on sustainability and the global environmental impact of flying.

Our expertise in transportation and environmental issues means that we can provide transparent advice and designs that can help our aviation clients make choices based on a sustainable balance of social, economic and environmental factors.

In the UK, recent growth in air travel has been most pronounced at regional airports, as a direct result of congestion at the airports in the South East. In Europe too, the growth in air travel is providing development opportunities. We have the necessary development and design skills to help airport operators either to provide enhanced capacity by designing new facilities, or to optimise existing facilities in order to maintain service levels by devising more streamlined operating practices.

Measures taken to protect passengers and facilities against the threat of terrorism are, in themselves, causing capacity constraints. We can help operators to adhere to rising security levels without compromising operations and functionality.

As experts in all aspects of sustainable development and implementation, we are well placed to provide consultancy on the preparation of new and/or amended policy and legislation, as well as in analysing the effects of such policy change on affected clients, be they airports, airlines or regions.
