Project detail

The Tyne and Wear Freight Partnership was established in April 2005 by the Local Transport Plan (LTP) team in recognition of the importance of addressing freight within the LTP.  It is run by Faber Maunsell, and incorporates representatives from local authorities, operators, industry representatives and other stakeholders.

The partnership operates on the basis of an action plan which is targeted at delivering tangible outputs.  Following a study into the Nature of Freight, the partnership undertook a review of signage, and published the Tyne and Wear Freight Map.  Freight routing information has since been enhanced through the production of tailored maps for key freight destinations.  These innovative and detailed maps identify preferred routes to key freight destinations and include directions from the strategic road network.

During 2006/07 a website was developed, which breaks new ground by providing a ‘one-stop shop’ in terms of information and advice for freight operators in Tyne and Wear.  It includes detailed up-to-date information on freight routes, traffic information, lorry parking, contacts for local authority traffic officers, Freight Best Practice and provides answers to common questions.  The site encourages users to provide feedback on the resources available in order to inform the future development of the site.  The site can be accessed at www.tyneandwearfreight.info.

Tasks to be completed during Year 3 include:

  • Operator Interviews and Visits
  • Website Development and Maintenance
  • Review and Update of the Tyne and Wear Freight Map
  • Additional Tailored Freight Destination Maps
  • Implement and Monitor Trial Electronic Information Point
  • Abnormal Loads Route Map
  • Mapping Highway Restrictions
  • Private Sector Truck Parking Reciprocation Pilot
