Project detail
The ‘Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Heavy Duty Vehicles’ project commenced in January 2007 in recognition of the ever increasing problem of rising GHG emissions in HDV. The Faber Maunsell led project seeks to identify and ratify measures and policies that can reduce GHG emissions within the road transport industry, whilst influencing future European Commission associated with this sector. The project can be dissected into three main tasks:
Task 1: Desk Based Research - The pan European desk based research study consisted of a survey of fuel saving measures, a review of current policy instruments and the development of an initial options list. The research covered all the main application areas for HDV whilst investigating measures such as improvements in repulsion technology, technical measures regarding the rest of the vehicle, changes in types of fuel used, operational aspects, driver training and management changes over a short, medium and long term implementation period. The survey also covered policy instruments, researching aspects such as location, type of organisation, status and type of instrument.
Task 2: Reality Checks – On completing task 1, the project team then visit key players within the transport industry to discuss their findings. The purpose of this exercise is to attain the operators’ knowledge of measures, whether they have planned/considered measures, discover their awareness of the subject and the obstacles they have encountered.
Task 3: EU policy Intervention Points – This task uses the previous information gained to create policy recommendations that the European Commission can use to reduce emissions from HDVs in the short, medium and long term.
