Project detail

Faber Maunsell is currently undertaking the EIA for the proposed new airport for the isolated island of St Helena, situated in the South Atlantic midway between Brazil and Angola.  The Island is currently served by the RMS St Helena, a mixed passenger and container ship, which is due for retirement in 2010.

The airport site is on Prosperous Bay Plain, the only suitable area for the development and the EIA includes the Airport footprint area, potential haul routes (to bring construction materials and equipment to the site from the offloading point on the coast), access routes and the offloading facilities required.

The project is being delivered in a number of stages. The first phase includes baseline studies and an environmental appraisal report which will be used to inform the Invitation to Tender (ITT) documentation for the letting of the construction contract.  Faber Maunsell's team will then be undertaking the full EIA during detailed design work in partnership with the appointed designers and contractor.  Faber Maunsell is also responsible for the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) which will be used to ensure that environmental mitigation and management is safeguarded during the construction process and will be undertaking monitoring and continuous support to the St Helenan environmental authorities during this period.

As part of the EIA process, Faber Maunsell will be undertaking the Public Consultation exercise to support the EIA and will be involving all members of the Saints community, both on island and in the important economic communities in the UK, Ascension and Falkland Islands. The team is also assessing the institutional capability (skills and legislation) of the Island to manage the EIA process and will be presenting recommendations for ensuring that the island has the mechanisms and structures in place to meet the environmental challenges of infrastructure development and investment that are projected to arise as a result of the Airport opening.

A number of unique and rare species are only found on St Helena, including specially adapted spiders on Prosperous Bay Plain, the plant 'Babies Toes' and the endemic Wirebird.  Visual, ecological and long term strategic issues for environmental protection have all formed a key part of the work programme and assessment to date.
