Olympic Route Network

UK

Project outline

The project was a review of the Olympic Route Network (ORN) as defined by the Olympic Delivery Authority.  This involved looking at the existing journeys times along the ORN and comparing these against the target journey times as set out in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Bid.

This allowed the identification of problem links and junctions on the ORN that would require various types of improvements including temporary and permanent measures to achieve the target journey times.

Contract value

£100,000

Key features

The first part of the project was mostly a data collection exercise, collating information relating to 170km ORN network within Greater London that would be used for this study and future studies.  The data collection exercise was a huge task, below is a list of a few of the items included namely:

  • ITIS journey time data
  • Timing sheets for all signal controlled junction and Pedestrian Crossings
  • Location of CCTV cameras (Congestion charging, security, speed cameras, ANPR cameras etc)
  • Bus lanes, Bus Stops
  • Aims data.

A toolkit workshop was held with the Project Team, representatives from all TfL area teams and the Olympic Delivery Authority to identify temporary or legacy measures that could be used to facilitate the movement of the Olympic Family around the Olympic Route Network.

Skills utilised

Mapinfo software was used as the platform for our GIS model of the Olympic Route Network which contained all of the project information.  All the information is contained on a number of Hard Disk drives which have been distributed to TfL and other Consultants working in parallel on this project.  Faber Maunsell continues to provide GIS support to TfL maintaining the GIS model.

Project detail

Faber Maunsell have been commissioned by TfL DRND to undertake Stages 1 & 2 of the Olympic Route Network (ORN) Investigation project.

TfL propose to engage in a programme of work over the next six years to plan and implement both permanent (legacy) and temporary highway and traffic improvements to facilitate the movement of the 55,000 strong Olympic Family during the 60 day Olympic and Paralympic period between 16th July and 9th September 2012.

In agreeing with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) that TfL will take responsibility for the requirements of the ORN for London 2012 TfL need to determine optimal journey times for Olympic Family traffic on the ORN together with the most appropriate methods of delivering the proposed level of service.  This initial assessment is the subject of Part 1 of the proposed Olympic Route Network Investigation encompassing Stage 1 – Data Collection and Current Operation and Stage 2  - Optimum Journey Times and Intervention Requirements.

It is proposed that further stages of the project (Part 2) will be commissioned at a later date and will include five further stages that will comprise outline design and costing, correlation with other TfL investment plans, security and contingency issues, liaison with utilities and the development of an enforcement strategy.
