Lea Bridge Roundabout

Hackney, UK

Project outline

Transport for London appointed a Project Design Team led by Faber Maunsell comprising several Contractors and Consultants to deliver a complex scheme in Hackney, East London.  The initial objective of the scheme was to provide a new bus stand area within the highway limits of the junction to allow the reduction of bus stands in nearby Clapton Pond.  Earlier scheme proposals had met with negative stakeholder and local resident response so Faber Maunsell became involved to develop another option. The new proposed scheme made innovative use of the central island, which had become a wasteland filled with rubbish, by locating the bus stand on the actual roundabout central island as well as upgrading the adjacent highway with realigned kerbs, new markings and signs, and traffic signals.  Existing pedestrian subways were filled in and ground level pedestrian facilities improved.  Buses leave the roundabout under traffic signal control providing improved priority.  The facility provides important bus standing facilities for 7 bendy buses and 1 12m bus in a deprived area of London with limited access to private vehicles.

The design also incorporated substantial urban real and landscaping improvements to make significant enhancements to the area.  The environment of the area has been enhanced not only through the landscaping but by removing existing sub standard bus stands from residential streets to this stand away from residents.
