A1 Improvements, Dishforth to Barton

Dishforth/Barton

Project scope

The archaeological assessment is one of many aspects of the A1 Dishforth to Barton improvements undertaken by Faber Maunsell.

The Stage 3 DMRB assessment included a review of archaeological work undertaken on the A1 between Dishforth and Barton in the mid 1990s. This led to the commission and management of further survey work. Mitigation strategies for the route have been developed in consultation with English Heritage and North Yorkshire County Council. The Cultural Heritage chapter of the Environmental Statement has also been completed.

The archaeological team oversaw the commissioning and management of survey and excavation work for the project, which included geophysical survey, fieldwalking, palaeoecological survey and a survey of historic buildings. Liaison is ongoing with English Heritage and the County Archaeologist. This work has come together to create the completed Cultural Heritage chapter for the Environmental Statement.

Scheduled Monument Consent applications have been submitted for the three Scheduled Ancient Monuments of Roman date crossed by the route.
