Project detail
Faber Maunsell has been commissioned by BAA, the world’s leading airport operator, on a 10-year framework contract to provide consultancy in respect of surface access to BAA’s seven airports in the UK. As part of the framework, Faber Maunsell is currently involved in work at Stansted, Gatwick, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. In particular, leading the development of a surface access strategy to serve development of a second runway at Stansted Airport.
The development at Stansted follows on from the Government’s Air Transport White Paper, published in December 2003, which recommended that the airport should be the site of the first new runway in the South East, to serve the continued expansion of air travel. The airport operator is working closely with Government and regional stakeholders to bring forward a planning application for the development.
The surface access strategy is considering all modes of transport to the airport, particularly car, rail and bus for air passengers and airport employees. In developing the strategy, considerable attention is also being given to the growth in the sub-region, earmarked for growth as part of the Government’s Sustainable Communities Plan.
Faber Maunsell is responsible for developing transport models of the region, and using those models to develop the surface access strategy for the airport, whilst taking account of the needs of the regional growth in population and employment. Faber Maunsell is also leading engineering studies of the M11 between the M25 and the airport, considering a range of options from Active Traffic Management through to widening.
