Flood Risk Management
Faber Maunsell is one of the leading consultants in flood risk management in the UK. Our capabilities range from high level strategic studies such as Catchment Flood Management Plans and Shoreline Management Plans through to the evaluation of options, detailed design and implementation of flood management schemes as well as the provision of expert advice and development of best practice guidance.

Flooding is of major concern in the United Kingdom and this has been amplified recently through significant flood events during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. The impacts of flooding can result in costly repairs, loss of business and in some cases loss of life. The potential prospects for climate change could further increase the risk of flooding in future years.
Faber Maunsell can provide all services associated with flood risk management from strategic planning, through feasibility studies to detailed design and site supervision of flood management schemes. As framework partners to the Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Rivers Agency (Northern Ireland), we are engaged in the implementation of Flood Risk Management programmes for many river catchment and coastal areas.
Through the Strategic Flood Risk Management Framework for the Environment Agency we undertake work on flood mapping and Catchment Flood Management Plans. We can provide hydrological and hydraulic modelling services to help identify flooding problems and solutions as well as predicted flooding extents and frequencies. We have produced flood maps with and without defences and considered the flood inundation from various breach scenarios using 2d models for both tidal and fluvial events. We assisted in the testing of the ‘Flood Estimation Handbook’ and prepared Guidelines for the Environment Agency on its use. We have also produced real time flood forecasting models to assist in the provision of flood warning to areas at risk from flooding.
In addition, we are experienced in providing strategic and site specific flood risk assessments in accordance with latest Planning Policy Guidelines. We have undertaken numerous strategic flood risk assessments for local councils and this extensive experience led to us producing the ‘Best Practice Guidelines for Preparation of Strategic Flood Risk Assessments’. Faber Maunsell’s expertise was also sought on a number of high profile projects including the National Reviews of the Easter 1998 and Autumn 2000 floods.
We are currently engaged on numerous flood management schemes throughout the UK including major watercourses such as the Yorkshire Ouse, smaller watercourses in confined urban environments, land drainage for Internal Drainage Boards and coastal protection for Local Authorities. Typical works for schemes include new culverts and bridges, flood walls and embankments, channel diversions and enlargement, hard and soft sea defences, flood storage areas under the Reservoirs Act, pumping stations and environmental improvements. As well as the feasibility, detailed design and contract supervision capability we are also able to provide a full service including topographic survey using our in-house GPS equipment, condition and structural assessments, economic appraisal in order to obtain grant funding and environmental impact assessment. We consider that it is essential to include our fully integrated team of environmental specialists to enable us to provide solutions that not only protect but enhance the environment.
