Eyemouth Harbour Development
Berwickshire, UK

Project outline
A deep water basin extension to the historic fishing harbour, providing greater facilities and access for larger fishing boats at all states of the tide. After marine site investigations, the conceptual design was tested and validated by model studies before proceeding to detailed design, approvals, consents and tendering.
Construction comprised the following main elements: -
- Dredging harbour approach and navigation channel
- Main basin work done in the dry behind offerdam
- Excavation of 60,000m3 of rock for new basin
- 250m of fish landing quays and another berthing
- Suspended deck with a further 75m of berthing
- Wave spending beaches and a slotted wavescreen
- Rock-armoured embankment using excavated rock
- Paved areas, roadways and footpaths
- Road access via a new distributor road
- Ancillary facilities, services and landscaping
In addition to the design work, contract administration and site supervision the firm also carried out an environmental impact assessment and guided the project through the planning and legal processes. Environmental harmony was particularly important since the development lies within the Eyemouth old town Conservation Area, a Category A listed mansion house overlooks the site, a marine SSSI lies to the east and a Marine Consultation Area to the north.
