Shoreline Management Plans
Cumbria, UK

Project outline
We prepared Shoreline Management Plans (SMP) for two littoral sub-cells, 11d and 11e, covering a total of 210km of the Cumbrian coastline. This coastline consists of a wide range of natural and artificial landforms, dune systems and low lying grasslands to cliffs formed of industrial slag deposits port and harbour developments, industrial and residential frontages and extensive estuary systems. A variety of natural and man made coastal defences protect the coastline from erosion and flooding. One of the more interesting aspects of the study was the prediction of the future evolution of the coast accounting for the cessation of industrial slag and spoil disposal into the littoral zone.
The commissions are for both Stages I and II of the SMP preparation. Stage I incorporates data collection, a consultation exercise and their assessment in terms of coastal process, the natural, human and built environments, developments in the coastal zone and coastal defences. During Stage II the management objectives, management units and coastal defence strategy policy options were devised from the results of Stage I in collaboration with the project management group, comprising of representatives from local Maritime Authorities and other responsible organisations.
