Project detail

West London Tram is an ambitious project to upgrade a public transport corridor that is currently struggling to meet demand. Being completely road based, the tram scheme presents a number of challenges to the designer, particularly in the town centres along the route where the road corridor is narrow. Through our work on a number of appointments, Faber Maunsell have made a major contribution to moving this high-profile scheme to Transport & Works Order application.

Design Management

Faber Maunsell provided design management services as design consultants were appointed to progress the preliminary design to Public Consultation and TWA submission. Services included assistance with preparation of tender documentation, evaluation of tender returns, interview of tenderers and recommendation. Upon appointment of consultants, the Faber Maunsell team managed the delivery of the design, liaising with TfL internal stakeholders in addition to external bodies such as Borough Councils.

Optioneering

Faber Maunsell design teams from our Beckenham and Manchester offices engineered a number of scheme options in the London Borough of Ealing. The driver for the optioneering work was to develop the best solutions for bringing the tram through the constrained town-centres – Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing and Acton.

The Faber Maunsell team also facilitated the evaluation of a number of potential sites for the depot, providing engineering input into the process. Faber Maunsell then worked up leading depot options in detail to allow final selection to take place

Faber Maunsell also worked up schemes for four alternative routes to the preferred depot site, options for an interchange with Ealing Broadway railway station and alternative termini at the Hillingdon end of the route. Deliverables included 1:1000 drawings and an appraisal summary report with Key Performance Indicators for each option.

Public Consultation Support

Faber Maunsell provided engineering experts to present to local consultation groups in the London Borough of Ealing on the development of the West London Tram Scheme. The team presented the detailed drawings produced as part of the Optioneering process, talking through the various options with the consultation groups and listening and noting their comments. Following this, Faber Maunsell provided engineering experts for a 3-month formal Public Consultation along the whole route.

Deemed Planning Permission Drawings

Faber Maunsell were appointed to produce some 400 detailed and outline Deemed Planning Permission drawings in support of the West London Trams Transport & Works Order submission.
