Project detail

The programme began following the UK Government commitment at Kyoto to CO2 reduction targets to hit by 2010. The aim of the programme is to help reduce the amount of CO2 produced by the freight industry in England.  It is funded by the Department for Transport (through its Freight Logistics research division).

The key aim and messages of the programme message sold to the industry is to operate more efficiently to reduce operating costs (and as an added benefit reduce environmental impact, specifically CO2 production). The programme is founded on the key messages of ‘reduce fuel consumption and maximise vehicle utilisation’ – in other words, ‘operate smarter, be more productive and use less resource’

The programme develops a range of publications aimed at promoting operational efficiency in the freight industry (the vast majority of these refer to road freight transport)  The key outputs are publications, including Good Practice Guides (covering specific subject areas intended to promote efficiency, like fuel management, telematics and aerodynamics); Good Practice Case Studies (covering operator specific examples of efficiency improvements at the likes of Thorntons plc, Transco etc); Benchmarking Guides (covering key performance indicators for specific industry sectors, such as Non food retail distribution, pallet networks); Freight Future newsletters (covering updates on Programme activities and future plans) and other materials such as Videos on fuel efficiency in truck Fleet Management.
