Project detail

The town of Rugby, situated in the West Midlands, suffers from traffic congestion, and therefore like so many urban areas, air quality is of major concern. The presence of a large cement works located in close proximity to the town centre exacerbates these concerns.

All local authorities in the UK have certain obligations regarding local air quality. Our air quality team is enabling Rugby BC to meet their obligations, through the preparation of air quality review and assessment reports. This is facilitated by a comprehensive combination of air quality monitoring and modelling. We also advise the council on ways to improve their air quality, and provide assistance at public consultation events. In addition, through an air quality helpline, the public can have their questions and concerns addressed.

We provide and maintain air quality monitoring equipment throughout the Borough. There are four mobile laboratories that contain real-time analysers measuring nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, and particulate matter. In addition there is a network of 19 lamppost mounted particulate monitors, sited at strategic locations throughout the Borough, and around the cement works, which provide excellent spatial cover. Therefore Rugby BC has one of the most comprehensive particulate monitoring networks of any local authority in the country.

We employ the AAQuIRE software, developed by Faber Maunsell, to model the dispersion of pollutants emitted by road traffic and the cement works. This software is used widely by air quality management professionals throughout the UK, and allows the production of detailed air quality maps.
