Project detail
Appointed by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to design and supervise the construction of two new solid waste landfill facilities and the restoration of five existing landfills on the two islands.
Allied to environmental improvement programmes for the wider Eastern Caribbean, the work lead the way to improving the existing environment, enhancing the quality of life and supporting the expanding tourist economy. There were five existing waste disposal sites - at Cook's Old Road and Freetown on Antigua and at Plantation and River on Barbuda.
At Cook's, the new site was developed adjacent to the existing one, with construction of a fully engineered waste containment landfill cell, together with on-site facilities including 5m weighbridge, site control building, 2 steel framed buildings upgraded road (1.2 km) and leachate management lagoons. Traffic management was also improved.
A tyre baler was purchased and used to reduce the substantial pile of scrap tyres. Some of the bales were incorporated into the road embankment.
At Plantation, the existing landfill was restored and a new landfill cell constructed along with on site facilities including site control building, steel-framed building and leachate lagoons. Rock blasting was used to loosen the limestone to a depth of 2m.
The work was covered by a single works contract, funded with the assistance of the European Investment Bank, and administered under the FIDIC Red Book (Construction) Conditions of Contract and EU procedures.
