Project detail
Faber Maunsell has been involved in obtaining information from historical records as well as from the execution of field trials, analysing nightlines and arranging secondary validation of district metering areas. Once an area has been selected for upgrading the team has implemented a procedure of splitting the area into smaller control zones based on historic and current operational burst data, taking into account potential construction constraints, to localise areas of the network performing poorly. Through the use of such measures it has been possible to target areas most likely to be responsible for high, unaccounted water loss. Final confirmation of the need to upgrade distribution systems has been achieved through the use of step testing and associated field test procedures.
It is Faber Maunsell's responsibility to deliver the complete design and construction package which includes the preparation and detailing of construction proposals, as well as the Health and Safety assessments, and monitoring progress of the projects through the construction phase to final completion. Within this process Faber Maunsell is responsible for providing a response to all construction technical queries and generally provide the liaison and coordination functions between Thames Water and the contractor.
Drawing on the extensive experience gained in delivering the Thames Water distribution mains rehabilitation programme for those areas outside Central London, Faber Maunsell has been able to develop procedures for the selection of construction techniques most applicable for use in the congested and heavily serviced roads of Central London. Techniques utilised have included both trenchless and more conventional methods, with the prime concern being to deliver the optimum cost effective solution with the minimum disruption. In some areas work has been arranged to be carried out in conjunction with that of other utilities, in some cases with sharing of common trenches to effect savings to both involved parties.
