Project detail

City Inn Westminster is the largest new build hotel to be constructed in London in the last 30 years. Situated behind the Tate Britain, this Bennetts Associates designed, 14 storey contemporary hotel offers unrivalled views south over the River Thames. The overall impression given to the guest is one of cool elegance with attention to detail; a modern aesthetic which offers the traveller a refreshing alternative to the established chain hotels.

Faber Maunsell have brought significant innovations to this rapidly growing hotel brand, including prefabrication of engineering services, enhanced acoustic performance and structure IT & Communications cabling installations. The success of this project is shared with the entire design and construct team, who have collectively made the 4th hotel in the City Inn group stand-out as the jewel in the crown.

Led by the Building Services team within Faber Maunsell, key skills provided to this project included:

  • Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • Acoustics Consultancy
  • Detailed Thermal Modelling of Key Areas Including Glazed Covered Street
  • Specialist Lighting Design Including the Feature Foyer Tower
  • Information Technology and Communications Consultancy
  • Integrated Working With Design & Build Contractor Team and Sub-contractors

The project team included an Interior Designer responsible for all public areas including the restaurant, bars and reception. Integrated with the fit-out of these areas was a Barisol lighting installation which adds a bespoke character to the dining and bar areas.

A major public realm project was integrated into the construction project whereby a new covered street was created, linking John Islip Street to Thorney Street. This "project within a project" included working with a specifically appointed artist who produced an overall design concept for the "Art Street" and who provided carved slate reliefs lining the space. Faber Maunsell designed specific lighting design to complement this important "new" public space.

For City Inn, the highest standard of bedroom acoustic performance is integral to the brand. Faber Maunsell's own acoustic consultants advised the client and design team throughout, inputing to project specifications and undertaking final testing of complete installations.
