Air Quality Management

We provide a comprehensive range of air quality management, monitoring and assessment services to assess and improve ambient air quality and provide expert advice including dispersion modelling for policy and development studies.

Faber Maunsell's team of air quality scientists is recognised throughout the UK for our understanding of ambient air quality and air quality management issues. We have assisted a wide range of clients across the country to meet their statutory obligations as well as to plan for the future.

This has included the development of advanced software tools for assessment and analysis of short and long term dispersion impacts from industrial, domestic, commercial and transportation sources of air pollution.

We have a fleet of mobile laboratories and also provide automatic monitoring services including on-site calibration and ratification of equipment and data in accordance with the highest QA/QC procedures.

Whether providing training, assisting in public consultation exercises or mapping out action plans and strategy to meet desired air quality standards, our team is able to deliver the right solution for every air quality management situation.

  • Air quality monitoring - point and continuous
  • QA/QC of monitoring networks and equipment
  • Data ratification

Ambient Monitoring

Faber Maunsell is rapidly becoming one of the UK's leading ambient air monitoring consultancies, offering a vast array of experience in designing, managing and operating case-specific monitoring programmes on behalf of governmental departments, regulatory bodies, local authorities and industry.

Faber Maunsell currently operates a fleet of three mobile air quality monitoring laboratories, with full meteorological monitoring capabilities, and comprehensive real time analysis of key UKNAQS pollutant species:

  • CO-Single beam NDIR
  • NOx-Chemiluminescence
  • O3-Ultraviolet absorption
  • SO2-Dual beam NDIR
  • PM10 TEOM, & β-attenuation
  • Benzene-Absorption tubes
  • 1,3-Butadiene-Absorption tubes
  • Lead-Gravimetric

Faber Maunsell also routinely designs, manages and undertakes widescale monitoring of ambient concentrations of additional pollutant species over long and short term. Studies have been successfully undertaken to determine ambient concentrations of H2S, NH3, speciated VOCs, total particulate matter and bioaerosols (such as glucans, fungi, bacteria and endotoxins). All Faber Maunsell ambient air quality monitoring staff are trained and their methods are routinely audited as part of our LSO commitment to both the UK Urban Automatic Urban Network and UK Automatic Rural Network (AURN) for a number of sites across the UK.

Air Quality Management

Local authorities are now responsible for local air quality management. Faber Maunsell can provide an independent, cost effective service for local authorities at any stage of the development of an Air Quality Management Plan.

Dispersion Modelling

The impact of industry and road transport on local regional and national air quality may be determined by ambient monitoring and/or predictive modelling. Faber Maunsell uses internationally validated dispersion models for industrial emissions. For larger air quality studies requiring inputs from industrial point and fugitive emissions, and traffic emission sources, the AAQuIRE 6.1 system is used. AAQuIRE 6.1 was designed and developed by Faber Maunsell, and is the market leader for regional air quality assessments. Dispersion modelling software used and recommended by Faber Maunsell includes:

  • AAQUIRE 6.1 - an integrated air quality management modelling system
  • AERMOD and ISC (Industrial Source Complex) - for industrial point or area source emissions
  • CALINE - for road transport and other line source emissions
  • FDM - for dust assessments from construction or mineral extraction processes.

Emission Inventories

Local authorities compiling transport and industrial emissions inventories will find the experience Faber Maunsell has in data analysis, GIS presentations and training in database compilation invaluable.

An updatable emissions database provides an ideal design and planning tool to evaluate air quality management plans prior to their implementation.

AAQuIRE 6.1

AAQuIRE 6.1 is a new generation regional air quality model for traffic and air quality management. Based on the original Faber Maunsell AAQuIRE model, AAQuIRE 6.1 is primarily designed for use in the Air Quality Review and Assessment process. The model allows for integration with any GIS system as well as linking to a variety of traffic models to allow efficient evaluation of transport management plans. AAQuIRE 6.1 is fully Year 2000 compliant and runs on Win95/NT based systems.
