The Lighting Group provides independent lighting design for a wide variety of architectural and environmental projects. With a passion for lighting, architecture, interior and urban design combined with technical analysis and accuracy, we work within the design team to create a positive visual environment.

Faber Maunsell’s lighting designers come from a wide range of backgrounds including architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and urban design. With an interest in the visual environment, we work in a variety of sectors in the UK and abroad and on projects of every scale.

The Lighting Group has a passion for the creative and technical aspects of lighting design and looks for challenges and ways to improve the overall design and environment of every project. Below are the key sectors of our practice.

Museums and galleries
Our designers have specialised experience in modern and historic museums and galleries encompassing architectural as well as exhibition design. We understand the need for flexibility, sustainability, and the desire to create a unique and engaging environment.

Daylight analysis and modelling
Access to natural light can greatly enhance the built environment. Our designers use cutting edge computational technologies to prototype innovative architectural solutions. Through prototyping we optimize the design of intelligent façades, gallery skylights and light pipes. In addition, we can study the built form of proposed developments which enables us to manage their impact on daylight and sunlight availability.

Retail
Whether a small boutique or a large outlet, lighting plays an important role in highlighting the merchandise as well as creating a comfortable atmosphere. Our designers have experience in high-end fashion boutiques to larger shopping centres.

Urban lighting
The role and functioning of the city at night is an important aspect of urban life. We have extensive knowledge and understanding of current urban design practices as well as experience in projects in established and regenerating urban areas.

Corporate
Workplace lighting is essential for creating a positive visual environment for places where people spend most of their time. Our team understands this need to create an interesting and well designed space that can make workplaces more dynamic and healthy for its occupants. Designing lighting systems which satisfy this ethic whilst meeting ergonomic and energy targets is a key part of our service.

Residential
Lighting for homes involves a balance of ambience and task lighting as well as the understanding of controls for those using the spaces. Our team understands both the need for contrast, warmth, and visual interest as well as the increasing importance of domestic lighting and energy efficiency.

Hotels
Modern and historic hotels have many of the same challenges as residential and retail projects and require great attention to detail as well as a knowledge of the effect of the colours of light and creating the right visual balance
